Farnham

Farnham will surprise you! Just an hour's drive from London, on modern high speed roads, take the turning and you enter a different world. It is an old English market town with narrow streets lined with some of the finest Georgian architecture in the South of England with a parish church and castle dating back to the 12th Century.

Farnham has a host of attractions for visitors, and its historic character combines with the best of modern facilities.

With a wealth of tempting opportunities for escaping to the countryside, shopping, eating out, sightseeing, visiting galleries or just sitting in gardens and flower filled yards soaking up the enchanting atmosphere.

If you spend some time walking around the town, especially near the parish church, St Andrews, and the small streets off the main shopping streets, you will find some beautiful buildings with great character.

Farnham has been an important place for thousands of years. Bronze and Iron Age peoples used it as a junction of track ways, and the Romans used its plentiful clay to make stunning pottery. The Saxons gave it its name.

There are lots of interesting places to visit in Farnham:

  • The Farnham Pottery in Wrecclesham
  • Waverley Abbey
  • Farnham Castle – managed by English Heritage
  • The Farnham Maltings – the local Arts venue

And not far away:

  • Gilbert White's house at Selbourne (25 mins away)
  • Jane Austen's house at Chawton (15 mins away)
  • Alice Holt Forest
  • Birdworld (near Borden)

Some guests enjoy walking along the footpaths across farmland and hills just near Dove House, enjoying the views over the town and the rural landscape of Hampshire and Surrey.

Quotes taken from Trip Advisor reviews:

Ive stayed here on a number of occasions now for work, and have also tried other places in Farnham. I have to say that this is the best in the area and offers very good value for money. Both bedrooms are very pleasant, and as a bonus, have good books and pictures, and no frilly floral valances or china ladies in sight. Breakfast is delicious, with excellent coffee. Ros always welcoming, and, when I left my phone charger at her place, brought it into my workplace for me ... I recommend Dove House!

‘I was hoping for a place to lay my head after a long 10 hour working day, but Dove House proved far more than just that. Single rooms are usually grim, but this room was extremely comfortable, with everything you could wish for: stylishly cosy, spacious, and with the most delicious home-made cookies to accompany the relaxing herbal teas. Breakfast was wonderful, with lots of choices - fresh and fruity, organic and wholesome. And then the wonders of the calming treatments. Ros is a Reiki Master, and I can truly recommend treating yourself, or a loved one, to one of her restoring massages - Bliss!'

‘We decided to spend the weekend of Valentine's day at the Dove House in Farnham, mainly because of the holistic treatments on offer and the fact that it looked very homely. Upon our arrival in Farnham we were picked up by owner Ros' husband, Steve, as a courtesy. When we arrived at the house we got settled into our comfortable room, and immediately warmed to the peaceful environment. After a good night's rest, I proposed to my fiancé, on Valentine's Day! The Dove House is a very special place that one needs to experience in order to appreciate its little nuances. This is beyond a top quality establishment - it feels like a home. I would highly recommend Dove House to anyone needing some peace, and a rest from the rat race. Above all we were thrilled that we had met two wonderful people. To Ros and Steve - thank you for making our engagement weekend truly memorable! ’

‘What a fabulous stay at Dove House. It’s a superb B&B and very centrally located in Farnham. I was made to feel so welcome, the room was comfortable, with a TV, kettle, iron and hairdryer (and some fantastic home made biscuits!). Ros sent me directions to the house by email which was helpful as I am a nervous traveller in areas I don't know. The house felt peaceful and relaxing and reflects the fact that Ros is a complementary therapist as well. I had a Reiki treatment one evening which was marvellous and I slept like a log that night! In the morning there was a great choice of food for breakfast, and I particularly liked the fruit and the home made bread. All I can say is "go and stay"!!! ’

‘My recent stay at Dove House, Farnham in Surrey was for a two night bed and breakfast business stay. I arrived on Friday evening after a long journey and tiring show set up, to a welcoming and comfortable family home. I had telephoned a couple of days previously and Ros had very kindly agreed to cook us an evening meal. We had a delicious meal of honey chicken accompanied by roasted vegetables and crushed potatoes with stilton. For dessert, Ros had prepared a fabulously decadent chocolate mousse which was simply divine. The food was freshly cooked and the portions were more than ample. My room at Dove House was a comfortable double room with TV and tea making facilities. I had a great night's sleep in the comfortable and stylishly covered bed. A jacuzzi bath and shower were situated in the shared family bathroom. There was plenty of choice for breakfast - a feast of fresh healthy fruit salad, grapefruit and home baked toasted bead then a cooked full English breakfast. Dove House is situated on a quiet road with open countryside and walks on the doorstep. The pretty market town of Farnham is a short walk away and offers many excellent shops, craft galleries and restaurants. I had a lovely stay at Dove House; nothing seemed too much for Ros who even managed to fit me in for a professional and relaxing Tibetan Acupressure Head Massage - a perfect stay which I highly recommend.’

‘I think your bed and breakfast is lovely – I cannot fault it. The service is friendly and good. I didn’t feel homesick at all. Thank you very much.’
